Project Overview

Greenline Institute of Technology and Science (GITS) is a forward-looking higher education design proposal that reimagines the university for Washington, D.C., responding to critical challenges in U.S. higher education: unsustainable student debt, insufficient alignment with workforce needs, and the accelerating pace of technological change.

GITS adopts a “City as Campus” model that integrates museums, libraries, cultural centers, and community organizations into a cohesive learning ecosystem, transforming public spaces into active sites of instruction, collaboration, and research. The design centers on five guiding pillars:

  • Sustainability: Campus operations, curricula, and built environments prioritize ecological resilience and resource efficiency, preparing graduates to lead in a carbon-constrained world.

  • Co-design: Programs and learning experiences are developed collaboratively with students, community partners, and industry, ensuring relevance, accessibility, and shared ownership.

  • Experiential learning: Project-based, work-integrated, and community-engaged learning anchor the student experience, shortening the path from education to meaningful employment.

  • Technology integration: Thoughtful use of digital tools and hybrid modalities augments hands-on practice, personalizes learning pathways, and expands access without replacing human-centered pedagogy.

  • Positive pedagogy and learning science: Instructional design is grounded in evidence-based practices and the EMERGE framework to support mastery, motivation, and lifelong learning.

Combined, these elements create a flexible, inclusive, and future-ready model of higher education that reduces financial barriers, aligns credential pathways with labor market demand, and fosters civic engagement through deep ties to the urban fabric. GITS is positioned not as a conventional campus but as a distributed innovation platform—mobilizing city assets, industry partnerships, and learner-centered design to cultivate resilient, skilled graduates for the challenges ahead.
